2013’s first quarter has been laden with disappointments. A part of me feels like I’m setting goals without really thinking through their attainability, another is getting swept up in discouragement, to the point that I’m questioning if I’m even in the right wheelhouse, and still another is trying very hard to remain dedicated to what I’m trying to accomplish.

As cynical as it is, I think I might make a new resume of everything I’ve applied to and been rejected from.

Reunion show: how does one revisit the past - especially a past that seems like ancient history - and make it feel relevant? Is that even possible? A lot has changed since 2009, our last show. 3/4 of the band isn’t straight edge anymore, one of us doesn’t live here now, we all have different foci, different relationships, different tastes. Is it right to play the songs the same way we once did? Is it fraudulent to play with the same attitude? Should this be the nail in the coffin of our late youth? Is the destruction we sought back then still worth pursuing?

Or am I, like always, overthinking this?

punk presents a big dichotomy: the more idealistic among us pay a lot of lip service to the idea of it being open to anyone, that anyone can do it, that there’s nothing separating the audience and the performers, while those with some age under their studded belt are often more insular, guarded and as a result, accused of being pretentious, sometimes rightfully so. it’s not hard to understand this, if you stand back for long enough. the younger kids represent the changing of the guard, the future of the scene, and yet they want nothing so badly as to prove how much they deserve to be there. shows are almost always an “intimate affair” (read: 25 filthy asshole bike messengers in jorts with Amebix patches hiding their junk), so the more people there, the better the chances some one out of five or ten will stick. but the older kids, the ones who rule the pit with impunity make hay of the jocks and poseurs, in an effort to purify the scene as it recycles itself.

like any great art form, punk demands blood, and the reality is, you aren’t good enough for punk. no one is. that’s the joke. even the coolest punks are still the wimpiest geeks compared to half a million of the rest of the world’s populace. put all of DMS up against half the Zetas in Nuevo Laredo and you’ll see just how tough Boston is.

so why defend it? because it is, ultimately, an identity. some of us are lifers. we might stop going to every show, but catch them once or twice a month, try to keep up with what’s happening, but the mindset never really changes. our tastes don’t really change a lot. distorted guitars still sound right. screams aren’t offensive, they’re powerful. faster IS better, unless it’s reeeeaaaaaalllllly slow. but it’s best if it’s new and unique. even when all of these criteria are met, it’s obvious when it’s a cash grab, or worse, an attempt at being “cool.” Don’t, please. We know yr angle, and that’s what makes us look like hacks and amateurs. If we don’t let you in the club, it’s becuz we’re not interested in having our private passions made into the object of public sport. it’s short-sighted as a business model, but like I said, like all great art forms, punk demands blood. you don’t have a choice in the matter.
